Resolution Supporting Legislation to Save Lincoln’s New Salem
WHEREAS, Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site is an important part of the history and legacy of
Abraham Lincoln, our nation’s 16 th president and an iconic leader known worldwide; and
WHEREAS, New Salem draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the recreation of the small prairie
village where Lincoln spent his formative years, located about 30 minutes northwest of Illinois’ capital
city; and
WHEREAS, schoolchildren and visitors from across the world visit New Salem to learn more about how
Lincoln’s upbringing shaped him and his views before leading the United States through one of its most
tumultuous and transformative eras; and
WHEREAS, the New Salem State Historic Site faces significant deterioration today after years of decay;
and
WHEREAS, reconstructed log homes, roofs, buildings, foundations, chimneys, fencing, and even the
iconic Grist Mill all need significant repairs; and
WHEREAS, New Salem serves as an important tourist attraction and drives economic activity along the
corridor of Lincoln historical sites in and around the Springfield community he called home before
becoming President; and
WHEREAS, without a comprehensive plan and dedicated funding to address needs at the site, New
Salem’s future is threatened; and
WHEREAS, state legislation is needed to support strategic planning, revenue development and
volunteer coordination at the New Salem site;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the _________________ endorses proposed legislation to
address infrastructure and comprehensive planning needs at the New Salem State Historic Site; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the ___________________ urges the Illinois General Assembly to
approve the legislative changes needed to improve infrastructure and planning for the New Salem
State Historic Site.
